Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such medications must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
